The What, Why and How of Dog Behavior Training:

When you get your cute little pet home the first task ahead of you is dog behavior training. It is important to realize that by nature dogs are predators. So it is not surprising if they go about chasing wild geese in your garden. Moreover, dogs are mainly meant for open spaces and environments. When you suddenly reduce its space of mobility by keeping them indoors, it affects them psychologically and physically. They tend to become more listless, lazy and inactive. Though dogs are sociable, sometimes they tend to be wary of human touch or even the presence of too many people. You should realize that the being you are dealing with cannot speak to you if it has any distress. You need to learn it instinctively. Giving orders and tying a collar around it is far from nurturing a healthy living being.

Why Is It Important?

Thus dog behavior training becomes important so as to enable your dog to adjust best with the people and the environment surrounding it. You need to be patient yet firm with your dog. First let him know he has to be there when you call him. Most dogs have the tendency to scratch and dig and bite. During dog behavior training, make sure there are no other distractions around so that the dog can concentrate on what you are teaching it to do. When teaching the dog to come to you, make use of hand gestures excessively and also praise generously when he does the bidding.  Try initially with sit and stay, slowly moving on to the command of ‘come.’ You may need a few things to encourage the dog like a toy or some sort of treat.

Use of a collar and leash is helpful especially at the training stage. Make sure not to hit the dog with the leash. You can just hit somewhere else to simply generate the sound so as to compel the dog to obey. Try as much as possible to avoid scaring the dog in any way. Make sure you issue your commands clearly to the dog.

For The Trainer:

While training the dog to obey it is important to indeed make clear to the dog who is to be obeyed. Be patient, generous, persistent and firm. You cannot expect a dog to understand everything in a single go. You may need to repeat things more than once over a period of time. Also try and be consistent during your training periods as the dog may get confused as to what is expected of him or her.
