What is Dog Obedience Training?

Having a pet of your own is a delightful experience. Training it to be a pleasant and trustworthy companion is an even more delightful process. It is important to make your pet dog go through the process of dog obedience training and good behavior training soon after you have brought it home so that they can adapt well to the new environment with the proper knowledge  of what is expected of them and how they should behave.

In order to cultivate good habits in your dog, dog obedience training is apt as it deals with a number of aspects like house breaking, obeying commands and leash walking without pulling. To begin with you need to ear in mind he following points:

Task Difficulty Level

Do not ask your dog to perform a difficult task earlier in the process. Avoid being over-strict with it or it might just get frustrated and lose interest altogether. Be patient, polite and humane to your dog. Make sure you are sensitive to its needs.

Rewards:

Rewards and praises can work a great deal in order to help your dog learn faster and perform better. Give it small gifts every now and then. This will help to boost the confidence of your dog and will ensure greater participation and involvement in training. This actually helps when you are progressing to more difficult commands and acts to perform. Be sure not to over pamper your pet. Sometimes, it tends to take you very lightly and not perform or focus during training sessions. Be firm yet loving to your dog.

Punishment:

Even while punishing a dog, refrain from being overly critical or spanking it. Instead learn to penalize your dog. Give it something it does not like or ignore it for a while. It will understand you are upset with it.

Expectations:

Always make sure the dog understands what is expected of him. Be clear in your commands and expectations.  Do not confuse it. You need to make sure.

Dog Obedience training demands a great deal of persistence and consistency on the pat of the trainer. The first month when your dog comes home is a crucial time for it so make sure the basic obedience training and skills are imparted in the first month itself. Make training a routine chore. It does not have to be time consuming. Any training skills can be imparted while playing with the dog. A leash and a collar can be useful during the raining sessions. Try and use these sparingly though.
